FWhen the base coat has chilled, fit a piping bag with 1-inch circle tip and fill with 1 1/2 cups frosting. Pipe a vertical row of circles on the cake, then use the back of a spoon to gently smooth the circles horizontally in a counter-clockwise direction, forming a petal shape. Pipe another vertical row of circles next to the petals, use the spoon to smooth them down, and repeat to cover the entire cake.
While the frosting is still soft, place the back of the spoon against the cake and swipe back and forth to create peaks and swooshes in the frosting all over the cake. Return cake to the refrigerator for 30 minutes to firm up the frosting before serving.
The above cake is a sweet yet unique take on a quick cake due to its tall rectangular shape paired with pastel quilled and ruffled fondant flower decorations. By preparing your flower accents before baking, stacking and covering your cake you will find that this design is pretty quick and straightforward. Our top tip is to create a few more flowers than you think you will need in case you fancy adding to your design later!
